When it comes to relieving the symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) in the knee, clinicians may want to consider a new injection treatment.
Ferring Pharmaceuticals has recently launched Euflexxa™, an FDA approved product for treating pain associated with OA in the knee. According to the company, Euflexxa is the first and only non-avian derived hyaluronic acid.
Ferring notes that Euflexxa involves a three-injection treatment regimen that clinicians may utilize if patients have failed to respond to conservative treatment and analgesics for pain relief.
At the end of a recent 12-week study that compared Euflexxa and Synvisc, a larger number of patients treated with Euflexxa were symptom-free, according to Ferring.

An Emerging Answer For OA And RA Pain?
Are you looking for a non-selective, non-steroidal, antiinflammatory drug for patients suffering from OA and rheumatoid arthritis (RA)?
You may want to take a closer look at Pedinol’s Nalfon, a propionic acid derivative that is available in 200mg immediate release capsules. According to Pedinol, the manufacturer of Nalfon, the medication is indicated for the relief of mild to moderate pain and symptoms associated with OA and RA.
The company says Nalfon provides a potent analgesic that provides pain relief within 15 to 30 minutes.
Pedinol notes that a double-blind randomized study that compared Nalfon and oral ibuprofen in the treatment of adult patients with OA found that both drugs facilitated improvements with function and pain reduction at the end of the 15-day treatment period.

Product: Nalfon
A Supplement Solution?
A recent study says a combination of popular supplements may provide significant pain relief for people who have painful OA of the knee.
Nutramax Laboratories says its product, CosaminDS, was used for the Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), which was recently published in The New England Journal Of Medicine. According to the company, the study found that the combination of the two supplements significantly reduced moderate to severe knee pain due to OA.
The company adds that CosaminDS can protect cartilage and reduce joint pain. The product also reduces stiffness by using ingredients that are effective and easily absorbed.
Patients who suffer from knee pain due to OA may start to notice relief and positive changes after one to two months of taking the supplement, according to Nutramax Laboratories.

Can A New Orthotic Provide Pain Relief?
If an orthotic solution could aid some of your patients with osteoarthritis, you may want to consider an emerging custom device.
Osteoarthritis patients can now use a new long axis, offloading, double upright custom knee orthosis from Anatomical Concepts, Inc.
The Varum-Valgum Adjustable Stress (V-VAS™) orthosis provides customized relief for patients with knee OA, according to the company. It notes that clinicians have successfully employed the orthotic device in the treatment of non-operative tibial plateau fractures, moderate to severe genu valgum deformities and for postoperative use after a total knee arthroplasty.
The V-VAS maintains a non-binding mechanical function throughout the entire adjustment range via unique auto-aligning polycentric joints, says Anatomical Concepts, Inc. The company says the device eliminates the need for complex adjustments and can help patients achieve optimal varum and valgum stress relief.
