Topical Relief For OA Pain?

-

As this issue went to press, diclofenac sodium topical gel 1% (Voltaren Gel, Novartis) received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Novartis says it is the first FDA-approved topical prescription for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) pain.

While some patients may experience side effects with oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Novartis says Voltaren Gel provides an alternative as a topical NSAID with a favorable safety profile. According to the company, the systemic absorption of Voltaren Gel is 94 percent less than the comparable oral diclofenac modality.

Novartis says researchers have studied the safety and efficacy of Voltaren Gel in over 900 patients with OA of the knee or hand. It adds that the FDA approval was based upon findings from two randomized, double-blind efficacy studies as well as a 12-month safety study.

An Entire Exam In Your Pocket
Clinicians can now turn to a more compact, modern instrument for neurological exams. Many tools clinicians commonly use during a sensory neurological exam are now available in one light, compact, self-contained instrument.

The Neuro 7, manufactured by J&R Enterprises, includes a Wartenberg pinwheel, a retractable soft touch brush, a sharp-dull instrument, reflex hammers, a pupillary dilation chart, and a variable two-point discriminator.

The Neuro 7’s accessory biohazard kit includes replaceable poly pinwheels and sharp tips for the sharp tool as well as one-time use monofilaments for sensory testing of diabetic feet.

According to the manufacturer, the instrument is lightweight, durable and water-resistant.

Giving Weight To Diagnosis

A new scale helps clinicians better diagnose and treat mechanical disorders of the spine and musculoskeletal system, according to its manufacturer.
The BC-418 Segmental Body Composition Analyzer/Scale calculates regional body composition of the arms, legs and trunk as well as body fat percentage, body mass index and fat mass among other measurements.

According to the manufacturer, the scale is especially useful when evaluating a patient’s rehabilitation and/or strength and conditioning programs.

Getting Graphic
A newly released software program now makes it easier for clinicians to create presentation material.
The software combines over 1,000 professionally designed templates and over 3,000 illustrations straight from top medical publishers, according to the manufacturer.

The software features automated assistance to help clinicians with the creation of flowcharts, graphs or to compile study results easily and efficiently. The software also features “one click copy” to Microsoft Office programs or to “pdf” and other graphic formats.
